After the conquest, Mexico was renamed New Spain and became part of the Spanish Empire. The Spanish encomienda system forced indigenous people into labor, while missionaries spread Catholicism, building churches and converting native populations. Spanish culture blended with indigenous traditions, creating Mexico's unique mestizo identity.
