Chicanná was inhabited from approximately 300 BC to 1100 AD, with its zenith during the Late Classic period (circa 600–900 AD). The site is renowned for its intricate architecture, blending elements from various Maya styles, including Río Bec, Chenes, and Puuc. This fusion is evident in the elaborate facades, false staircases, and ornate stone mosaics that adorn its structures. Notably, Chicanná is considered to have been a center for the regional elite and possibly functioned as a retreat for nobles, rather than a fully urbanized city.
